Important
Admission is restricted to 18+
(except for Careers in Animation Forum,
Kids Program, Teen Programs and
Animation 101 - #3)

Film classification regulations in Australia require all films to either be formally classified OR restricted to an audience of 18 years of age and over. Most festivals do not have the resources to do this and it is for this reason alone that we are not able to admit any person under the age of 18 years to the main MIAF screenings.

101 #1: “The Hand” – A Portait
presented by Malcolm Turner

Tuesday 17, 5.15pm
acmi cinema 1

As part of our special focus on Puppet animation this year, we take a closer look at one of the greatest puppet films ever made – Jiri Trnka’s “The Hand” (1965).

This talk will look closely at the characters and the detail of the Trnka’s masterful technique as well as the way in which this film can be viewed as a kind of ‘life diary’, absorbing and reflecting the medley of moods and social catastrophes that befell Czechoslovakia and the filmmaker himself.

Screening
The Hand (Ruka) > Jiri Trnka > Czechoslovakia > 1965, 17’00

> The Hand also screens in Icons of Puppet Animation

101 #2: Voice Wrangling
presented by Pierce Davison
Wednesday 18, 5.15pm acmi cinema 1

Creator of “Professor Pebbles” (in the Australian Panorama) & currently working on Adam Elliot’s feature film, Pierce has been animating since he was a teenager. His indie films have shown all over the world.

Just one striking feature of “Professor Pebbles” is the menagerie of voice talent including such celebrity ‘appearances’ as Shaun Micallef and John Saffran. Wrangling, directing and capturing just the right voices in just the right ways can be a make or break for the final result and Pierce will share his experiences bringing this aspect of directing an animated film together.

101 #3: Meet The Puppets
presented by Nick Hilligoss

Thursday 19, 5.15pm
acmi cinema 1
This session is open to all ages

Continuing the focus on Puppet Animation, Nick Hilligoss will bring in a collection of the puppet stars of his latest film “L'Animateur”.

Creating a puppet film is part science, part pure magic and Nick will explain a little of both of these elements – with some help from his cast.

This talk promises to be a fascinating, up-close look at the way the animator must manipulate these inanimate creatures frame by frame and convince the audience to accept them as alive.

101 #4: Contentious Material
Presented by Russell Lowe
Friday 20, 5.15pm
acmi cinema 1

Many people are surprised to discover that animation as an artform often deals with controversial, contentious and even offensive subject material.

Every MIAF screens a handful of films that easily fall into this category. Russell Lowe’s latest film “The Evil Empire” will not be to everybody’s tastes. It depicts a porn addicted pope sending his armies to battle and visually leaves very little to the imagination.

Russell will discuss the making of this film in particular and offer his insights into how and why such material is an essential element of the animation landscape.

At the conclusion of his talk, “The Evil Empire” and a selection of other MIAF 08 “R Rated” films will be screened.

Screening
The Evil Empire > Russell Lowe, Federico Solmi >
Australia, 2008, 4'15

Teat Beat For Sex > Signe Baume >
USA, 2007, 4’00

Hezurbeltzak, A Common Grave > Izibene Onederra >
