Melbourne International Animation Festival 2007
> My Love, Alexander
Petrov > The Appeal, Ryszard Czekala > Roger Ramjet,
Fred Crippen
Welcome to the 6th Melbourne International Animation Festival.
It’s been another remarkable year of journeying far and wide to
find the gems that will screen in this years line up.
Word began trickling out that Alexander Petrov had released a new film
– his first major work since “The Old Man In The Sea”
five years ago. We finally got to see it at a festival in Portugal and
invited it on the spot. That night, in a little café by the sea,
it became obvious that between us we had seen a lot of fantastic ‘hand
painted under camera’ films. We drew up a list and knew that this
would be a special theme of the festival. And so it has proved to be -
two programs of some of the most beautiful, flowing animation you will
ever see.
Likewise, to see the best of Polish animation required a trip to Paris
where, two years ago, the Pompidou had screened one of the largest collections
of Polish master animators ever brought together. Boiling down that vast
collection to the two programs we present at MIAF tested our meagre grasp
of French to the limit.
But some of these gems found us. I picked up the phone one day 18 months
ago to find myself talking to the creator of one of my all time favourite
animated characters. Fred Crippen, creator of Roger Ramjet, was on the
phone asking me if I’d seen his retrospective that was presented
at the Ottawa festival earlier that year. Hell yes, I’d gotten there
early to make sure I had a good seat. Visiting Fred in his tiny studio
- a near anonymous building surrounded by a school somewhere in LA - to
finalise arrangements for his retrospective was probably the highlight
of my year. A true privilege of the job and more than ample compensation
for the screaming row I had with an idiot airport security screener that
I encountered on the same trip.
Similarly, through no effort of my own, I just happened to find myself
sharing a conference platform in Taiwan with John Finnegan, the Chair
of Siggraph 2006. His passion for this type of work is obvious the second
you meet him and getting him to help bring two “best of” programs
to MIAF was really just a matter of asking.
So here we are again, animation fans. Another couple of thousand entries,
another 350 films on the big screen, another chance to take the temperature
of the creative animation scene… another chance to share in the
most imaginative artform there is.

works by artists and sculptors, the exhibition includes spectacular
