Important
Admission is restricted to 18+
Except for:
Careers in Animation Forum
Kids Program
Kids Club: Dog Star in the Club
Felix the Cat
Film classification regulations
in Australia require all films to either be formally classified
OR restricted to an audience of 18 years of age and over.
Like most festivals, we do not have the resources to classify
films, and it is for this reason alone that we
are not able to admit any person under the age of 18 years
to the main MIAF screenings.

(Films in competition) |

|
Programs of the best recently released films selected
from 2400+ entries received from all over the world. The MIAF
International Competition screenings are the backbone of the festival
line-up and your up-to-date snapshot of the incredibly diverse,
eclectic and vibrant independent animation scene.
In addition to 7 ‘open’ International
Competition screenings, there will also be programs in competition
that focus specifically on Australian talent, the digital community,
the purely abstract, long form, picks from SIGGRAPH 2009, the
incredible technique of direct to film or 'scratch' animation,
and of course, the cult program Late Night Bizarre.

 |
Lebensader
Angela Steffen
Germany, 2009, 6'00
A beautifully drawn film with fluid hints of
Pacific Northwest Native American visual culture. A little girl
finds the whole world inside a leaf.
 |
 |
The Art Of Drowning
Diego Maclean
Canada, 2009, 3'00
A deceptively simple dissertation on
what awaits us at the end of the line. |
 |
Cornelis
Ayaka Nakata
Japan, 2008, 3'30
Eyes closed, Cornelis drifts to the centre
of his space. A graceful, imaginative dance. |
 |
Music!
Geoffroy Moneyron
France, 2009, 3'45
A stunning digital montage that follows a very special clown in the
midst of a hyperactive vacuuming mission. |
 |
Los Estrandados
Derek Evanick
USA, 2009, 7’00
One of the crazier films we got in the
mail this year – a strange, hilarious little tale of desert-island
dysfunction. |
 |
Six Steps
Ju-Young Ban
South Korea, 2009, 5'00
Escaping the periscope spies, one twin
girl makes a run for it when water starts coming in through the fireplace. |
 |
The Azure Soul
Julia Gromskaya
Italy, 2009, 4'00
If Monet animated, this is what we might
have seen. The crossroad of Azure Dreams, the meeting place of a pure
soul. |
 |
Road Runner
Zac Wong
USA, 2009, 3'30
With more than an unknowing nod to McLaren,
we follow a wild ride down a suburban street. |
 |
Birds
Filipe Abranches
Portugal, 2009, 7'00
An air of Hitchcockian evil takes flight
from every frame of this sinister misadventure, which follows an old
woman obsessed with birds and her son who thinks he can fly (and quite
possibly can). |
 |
Yulia
Antoine Arditti
France, 2009, 5'45
In a flash, Yulia suddenly vanishes from
her kitchen only to find herself in the middle of a closed room and
on the receiving end of some absurd events. |
 |
Garbage Angels
Pierre M. Trudeau
Canada, 2008, 5'30
An enchanting world filled with herds and swarms of creatures created
entirely from the detritus of everyday life. |
 |
Mixed Bag
Isabelle Favez
Switzerland, 2009, 7'15
A tale of greed, betrayal, cheap suitcases
– and more greed and betrayal. A day in the life of a bag of
lovely, lovely cash. |
 |
The Kinematograph
Tomek Baginski
Poland, 2009, 12’15
Francis, a humble clerk and a self-taught
inventor, had it all, it seemed: a big house in a small town, a lot
of free time and a loving wife. But… |
