5.15pm
Animation 101: Hannes Rall (Germany/Singapore)  15+
‘Si Lunchai’ is a remarkably different film than anything Hannes Rall has made previously. Here he will take us through the collaborative process of creating this distinctly Asian infused work, how it was done and what he – the teacher – learned in the process.

Hannes will also be presenting the Friday Key Note at RENDER Animation Conference.

6.45pm
BLEND SYMPOSIUM #1: In Defence Of Rotoscoping  15+
NADIA MICAULT (FRANCE) in discussion with DENNIS TUPICOFF (AUSTRALIA)
presented in association with DEAKIN UNIVERSITY
In ‘SONATA’, French animator Nadia Micault has created a vivid, elegant and evocative piece of moving image artwork that blends what were originally live action dancers into an ethereal, purely animated environment using the rotoscope technique. Australian animation legend, Dennis Tupicoff has also employed rotoscoping with powerful results and reactions. Here, Dennis will take Nadia through her experiences with rotoscoping and what unique properties it brings to her films.
'Fallt': Chadwick Whitehead 8.30pm
Panorama #1: International  15+
Four programs of ‘must-see’ films that perhaps arrived too late for competition selection, or maybe they had the jury battling it out on the floor(!). Every bit as eclectic and diverse as the International Competition programs, this is an essential part of core MIAF programming. PLUS – the AUSTRALIAN PANORAMA gives local animators one more chance to get their work up on the big screen where it belongs.
Cinema 1
'Na Ni Nu Ne No No': Manabu Himeda 6.15pm
International Program #2  15+
A diverse selection of the best new animated short films chosen from 2,900 entries!
MIAF’s international competition sessions are the backbone of the festival and screen almost daily throughout the festival, providing a comprehensive overview of the international indie animation scene.
'Stoplight / Semaforo': Simon Wilches 8.00pm
South American Showcase #1: Style Guide  18+
Bold, exuberant and energy to spare are some of the characteristics that make up the DNA of much South American animation. From the essences of lost cultures and the barely exorcised ghosts to retro flavoured ‘homages’, these three distinctly curated programs will deliver a rich brew of the best new works and main trends evident in the indie animation scene from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Bolivia...

The films in this program are visually confident, raucous and robust, with plenty of noise and a ton of flair. A love of quirky, retro flavoured ‘homages’ to classic US animation is a sub-genre that pops up surprisingly often, and like everywhere, the tentacles of gaming and CG blockbuster animation inform plenty of young South American indie animators.
