When you think about it, animation is the perfect vehicle for telling a true story. Maybe the camera wasn’t there to capture the scene, maybe a ‘talking head’ just isn’t enough to convey a visual message, maybe the images need an extra flourish to really drive home their meaning. Animation can bring so much to the documentary experience.

Animated Minds Series > Andy Glynne
UK, 2004 > 12’00
This amazing collection of films takes us easily inside the minds of people with a variety of mental illness. After watching these films, you will ‘get it’ – you will understand how the world looks to people in this position. Enlightening without being confronting, we found it impossible to choose one over the other and so have screened the entire series here. The series includes:
Fish On A Hook > 3'00
Obsessively Compulsive > 3'00
Dimensions > 3'00
That Light Bulb Thing > 3'00

No Experience Necessary > Stephen Loveridge
UK, 2002 > 3'15
With a visual style that comes in somewhere between 'Waking Life' and floating 2D line drawing, this film drills right to the heart of the joys of working for the minimum wage.

The Parthenon > Paul Debevec
USA, 2004 > 2'35
Debevec and his team of USC students use animation to gradually rebuild the Parthenon as it was originally created.

Bad Dad > Tasha Hollywood
UK, 2003 > 3'10
"I wouldn't have a relationship with a Bad Dad again, I was young and fascinated by the underlife of my home town but not any more", email from the filmmaker that came with the tape.

Confessions Of An Animation > Steve Baker
Australia, 2004 > 3'44
It's not all fun being an animation, you know. Some of them don't have any legs for instance.

Abductees > Paul Vester
UK, 1995 > 11'00
This series of interviews with people who firmly believe the have been abducted by aliens shows how tricky it is to define truth.

A Is For Autism > Tim Webb
UK, 1992 > 11'15
People with autism have a very unique view of our world. This film describes that view and also animation from people with the condition.

Pica Don > Renzo Kinoshita
Japan, 1978 > 10'12
Perhaps the first animated attempt to explore the bombing of Hiroshima, this multi award winning film uses animation to go to where no camera could.

Nibbles > Christopher Hinton
USA, 2003 > 4'05
Just because it's funny, doesn't mean it's not true. It takes some serious planning to get enough food together for a fishing trip.

Ryan > Chris Landreth > Canada 2004 > 14'00
A documentary in many layers. More than 30 years ago Ryan Larkin made four stunning animated films before dropping out and becoming homeless. Chris Landreth, master animator and pioneer of Maya software, found Larkin and chronicled his life in this stunning film which has swept all before it.
